Kicking the fear habit

How can this little rat be so happy sitting on that bomb? Perhaps he's become willing for the worst to happen?!

That's my technique for overcoming fear. It sounds unpleasant, but I promise if you try it, it will take the power out of any fear you are experiencing. The thinking that gives fear it's power is, If that happens it will be terrible, horrible, beyond my ability to bear! So the first step is to imagine the worst-case scenario, and go there with God in your mind. What would you do? What might God do? Would you survive? If not, what then?

Then comes the next step in the process. Believe for the best to happen! What is the best possible outcome? Imagine it and set your sights on it. This is not presuming upon God, but simply developing a positive outlook. You will be happier if you're believing for the best.

Prepare for the worst; believe for the best, and you will find peace! Promise.

  1. Hi Cyndi and welcome back!

I completely agree that facing one's fears is the quickest way to overcome those fears, as through the experience - you find out whatever it was you were afraid of, wasn't as bad as you thought it would be.

I am constantly in awe of how adaptive life truly is.

One thing though, the preparation part I feel is being open to receive and follow God's guidance and nothing more. Rather than stockpiling canned goods in fear of not having eatable food, simply take spiritual stock in knowing God will find a way to provide you nourishment in times of hunger.

  3. Interesting the power of irrational fear, which are most fears, isn't it?

I felt like this morning God was telling me to call upon Him in those moments - so often I forget to becuae I am trying to muster up strength in my own power becuase I know how silly the fear is. I am trying to use this technique or another - and I believe He told me I am trying too hard - call upon me - I am your very present help in trouble - even irrational ones.

    Thanks for posting!

  4. Very good point, Rachel! It seems like everything boils down to trusting God. Even this technique is empty without it. Imagining the worst is not enough; one must go there and work it out with God, ultimately deciding to trust Him no matter what. Thanks for your clarification. :)

  5. Yes, Cyndi, your technique was definitely a turning point for me. I agree, you have to imagine the worst with God, otherwise it is a scary place! :) And I also agree that He is the one who has to power the change. The imagining alone doesn't do it.

I've found when my mind starts wandering to the unknowable future, I have to stop thinking about it and instead tell God that I trust Him.

This was my verse for this morning:

"Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." Jn. 14:27

Sometimes I find reciting a verse that God has given me over and over crowds out the devil's sugestions too!

Thank you again for your help, Cyndi!

    Love, Jenny

  9. I agree with this philosophy and sometimes practice it myself too. Being prepared for the worst takes away any disappointment that you might have to face later. However, I think the best approach is to be neither overly pessimistic or optimistic, but to be realistic!
