Abandon Ship?

They were bailing for all they were worth, but it seemed that the next wave that plunged over the boat would be the last.

As is often the case, we think of praying as the last resort, which is why the disciples waited until this moment to wake Jesus. I always assumed  that he could sleep because he knew the future of the fishing vessel. But the exhaustion of healing and encouraging hundreds of people over countless hours, caused a slumber so profound that it was difficult to rouse him.  As the shouts and shaking penetrated his deep sleep, Jesus woke up angry.

"What is it?? Can't a guy get any down time? This better be good." He groggily stood  up on deck and looked around at the wind, the waves, and the hysterical disciples.

"Quiet!!" he bellowed more to the unbelieving fishermen than the storm. "After all you have seen, do you have no faith at all?"

Silence. Calm. Absolute quiet.

Glaring at the now-blissfully-silent disciples, he said, "Now leave me alone and let me get some sleep," and turned to go back into the hold.

Was Jesus as human as he was divine? Does Scripture come to us as a skeleton, sometimes no more than an outline, so that we can put ourselves and our experiences into the story? The outcomes can be  insightful and revealing, even though we are merely speculating.

Sacrilegious? Join the fisherman on their voyage and decide for yourself.

A Twist on the Theology of Fear

Evil “spawns” fear … BUT

The swat team raided the crack house with swift efficiency. But even the seasoned veterans were surprised at the tuft of white through the bushes. In the cage that had been her only world for five years, a small dog huddled silently, cringing in the terror of a certain death. It was a terror that even the most compassionate rescuer could not dispel.
As you have probably already guessed, that dog is “Doodle” (the dog we brought home this Spring).
As “children” do – or in this case “furkids” – ;) Doodle taught us an invaluable lesson. In this case, it was a new understanding of the problem of fear vs. trust.
Many times we think of fear as sin – or at least a shortcoming. After all, how many times does the Bible say “Do not fear”? At the very least, fear must cause God to be mildly disappointed.

Fear “Births” compassion in God

When we brought home this dirty little pup from the Shelter, she was basically frozen – just a little glob that you could put into any position without resistance. Scared to death.

A Firefighter -- unknowingly reflecting image of Chruist,-- revives a kitten

So we cleaned her up and began nursing her out of fear. We gently stretched her comfort zone, patiently coaxing her into trust.
We’ll never forget her first “blitz.” It was the day she finally let loose and ran for all she was worth – her tiny frame in full stride, flying around our big back yard in wacky puppy-whirls and loops.

Wacky puppy-whirls and loops
It was impossible to do anything but throw back your head and laugh with delight at Doodle’s thrill and *pure joy* in her first taste of freedom!!
Dare to imagine that God the Father actually throws back His Head and belly laughs when we finally “get it”!
God doesn’t expect trust. He knows it’s hard to be human because He took on human flesh. No, trust is received as cherished gift … a little bouquet of violets in the dirty hand of a child.

What is your cherished gift of trust to God?
  • Is it the courage to witness to the cashier at Taco Bell?
  • What about the courage to reconcile with that friend or relative when it's just too much trouble and probably won't change anything …
or will it?
  • Perhaps it's to expect respect when you know you don't really deserve respect …
or do you?
  • To face the fear of failure by taking that first baby step toward your dream
Perhaps it's just believing for the first time that God is safe.
That the Lion of Judah sent a
tiny “newborn sheep” to save the world
just so we wouldn't be afraid

Say what?! Jesus was feeble?!

I was drawn to a familiar verse this morning and did some digging that took me beyond the dullness which familiarity can bring into a freshness and light, like coming out of a coal mine into a fragrant forest with a store of diamonds. Let me take you on my adventure.

This comforting verse is Hebrews 4:14-16:
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are — yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace boldly, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

The first diamond is the word “sympathize.” The King James translates this “touched with the feeling of, “ the Amplified, “shared feeling.”

Did you catch that?? God has feelings. The same feelings that we do!!

The Catholic Public Domain Version, uses the word “compassion.” Last, my favorite, “commiserate mutually” (Strong’s number 4834-5).

So, Jesus mutually commiserates with us.
He feels the same way we feel,
soul to soul, brother to brother, friend to friend.
Jesus is not just my Lord, he is my brother and closest friend.
Wow, wow, wow!

Second is the word “weaknesses.” Strong’s number 772 translates this as “feebleness of mind, body, or morality (soul). The lack of ability to do things great and glorious, to restrain corrupt desires, or to bear trials and troubles.”

Do you grasp the significance of this word, feeble?
In my wildest imaginings I never thought of Christ this way.
Not only does He feel the same way I do,
but He has felt “corrupt desires.”
Jesus?!?!

At times, Jesus was weak,
feeble in mind and body -- and even in soul.

There were moments when Christ felt like he wasn't going to be able to do anything great and glorious
Jesus doubted Himself.

This makes me think of Him in the Garden of Gethsemane, weeping tears of blood. I’ve always known he felt anguish. But I never thought Jesus felt weak or doubted his ability to do the right thing!

But He came to earth in weakness as a helpless infant.
And, even though He rose in power and glory
Jesus is still the Lamb of God.

Few things are weaker than the newborn babies
whether of men or sheep.

This blows my mind! Jesus (that is God Incarnate) has felt this weak -- even feeble. He gets us. He was human. But he was the only human to feel this way, to BE this way and not screw up. That is the only reason He could take our sin upon his own shoulders. And that is the reason we can come “boldly” before God, the third diamond.

By now, I hope you are starting to see that God is safe. Not only does He not condemn us, but he feels like we feel. So when I am tempted. When I want to do the wrong thing. Or when I HAVE done the wrong thing, there is no barrier between me and God. ... None.

"Boldly,”(Strong’s 3954) means, “bluntly, frankly, openly — speaking freely, clearly, and fearlessly.”

If you are feeling like a failure,
or if you have failed,
go to God and spill your guts.

Don’t mince words. Tell it like it is. Talk to God like you are talking to the only Person you have ever been able to trust. Do you hate someone? Or maybe you just hate God. Are you angry or consumed with the desire to do something unspeakable? Maybe you have done something unthinkable. Go! Go bluntly, frankly, openly — speaking freely, clearly, and fearlessly to God.

And you know what you will find? You will find the fourth diamond, “mercy.” Strong’s 1656 tells us that mercy means “tender kindness joined with the desire to help.” So much for the idea of a hard-hearted high-and-mighty God holding a scepter on His judgment seat. That is not the God of the Bible. He did have to judge sin, but because He is the kindest, most loving, most compassionate Being in the universe, he judged Himself instead of judging us. No other god did that.

To us, He extends the last diamond, “grace,” my favorite. When we have done the unthinkable and we go to God, believing in the Gift given to us by the death and resurrection of His Son, we find:

Grace gives
joy
pleasure
delight
sweetness
charm
and loveliness.

Amazing!

If that is the way God treats me, how much more must I extend the same thing to my fellow man, no matter how offended I am by what he or she has done. As Jesus said at the end of His story about the Good Samaritan who loved and cared for his enemy who, under different circumstances, would have hated him, “You — Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:25-37).

The real Gospel is scandalous.
Dare to believe it
and then live it!

Simplicity in Prayer

Mother Teresa said, "We complicate prayer as we complicate many things."

So we simply come to Him in solitude and silence while He nurtures us. Our hearts are filled and we can then go out and nurture others.

We still our souls and listen for Him in the spring breeze, the twittering nightingale, the fluttering leaf, the gurgling creek. He speaks and we know what to say to the brokenhearted.

We still our souls and look for Him in the stars of the night, the break of the dawn, the dew on the leaves, the bloom of the rose. He appears and we know how to solve our most daunting problems.

Perhaps we light a candle, put on some soft music, and have coffee with Jesus. Or instead take off on a brisk walk. As we sink down into the present moment where God lives and the wind tousles our hair, His presence invades our emotions and dissolves our fears.

Dear Jesus,
Help us to spread your fragrance everywhere we go.
Flood our souls with your Spirit and life.
Penetrate and possess our whole being so utterly that our lives may only be a radiance of yours.
Shine through us
and be so in us
that every soul we come in contact with may feel your presence in our soul ...

You are safe!

I used to be terrified of losing my salvation. Years ago, God brought me to a total peace about it, for which I am quite grateful. I was reminded of this fear as I read Hebrews 6:4-9 this morning. I've always found it scary, but today, some things became apparent to me that I had never seen before. In a casual reading of the text it seems as if the author is talking about someone who is saved, who has committed her life to Christ, and then is lost. But I believe it is a warning, not to believers, but to unbelievers disguised in the Church. I have inserted a few notes of my own in [brackets] below:

Hebrews 6:4-9

4It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened [understood], who have tasted [but not eaten] the heavenly gift, who have shared in [but not received] the Holy Spirit, 5who have tasted [but not eaten] the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age, 6if they fall away [see1 John 2:19 below], to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.

7Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful [fruit of salvation] to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. 8But land that produces thorns and thistles [fruit of the lost] is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.

9Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are confident of better things in your case—things that accompany salvation. [In other words, "We wrote down this warning but it is not for you (believers) but for those among you who do not have salvation.]

1 John 2:19

19They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.

It became abundantly clear to me that Hebrews 6:4-9 is a warning to the lost, not the saved. Being enlightened is not being saved. Tasting is not eating. If a starving man only tastes food he will die. These are people who know the Truth, but never received it and never bore fruit.

If you are wavering or exploring the faith, this is not about you either. This text refers to someone who fully understands all the wonders of salvation and then lives their entire life in unbelief.

I realize this text is controversial, however, a well-accepted rule of hermeneutics is to interpret the unclear in light of the clear. What could be more clear than the following verse:

John 10:27-28

27My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.

In the original Greek, "no one" is emphatic. It means "no one, in no way, never!" "No one" includes ourselves. Be at peace for you are safe.

God's gotcha covered, and more!

One of the great truths of Christianity is that the blood of Jesus covers our sin. We are forgiven, and when God looks down on us He sees, not our sin, but the blood of His Son:

Job 14:17
My offenses will be sealed up in a bag; you will cover over my sin.

Psalm 32:1
Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.

Psalm 85:2
You forgave the iniquity of your people and covered all their sins.
In years past, I was grateful for this covering, but my misunderstanding of it gave me a sense of separation from God and made me feel like a filthy worm merely disguised by the Blood. Then God showed me there was more. I was no longer just a "sinner saved by grace." His blood doesn't only cover our sin, it cleanses us.

Psalm 51:7
Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Jeremiah 33:8
I will cleanse them from all the sin they have committed against me and will forgive all their sins of rebellion against me.

Ezekiel 36:25
I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols.

Zechariah 13:1
On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity. [That fountain is the blood of Christ.]

John 15:3
You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.

1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Our sins are not just covered, they have been washed away by the blood of Christ! We are no longer "bad" and "wrong." We are new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17), imperishable (1 Peter 1:23), created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness (Ephesians 4:24). The sacrifice of Jesus (received by faith) has made us good, likable people. (In our new, redeemed nature we are good [washed clean]. We are still responsible for our sin, but not identified by it, see The Two Yous.)

The foundation of self-esteem is first that we are created by God, second that we are loved by God, and third that we are made good in the truest part of ourselves by God. Don't disagree with what God thinks about you! Learn to like the new you!

Face to Face

When we search for God, He is not somewhere far away. When we look for him in the distance we look right past Him! Once we have placed our faith in Christ, He crosses the chasm that once separated us. Now He is right here, face to face with us, closer than the air around us -- even inside us! Thank you, Papa, for talking with us "face to face as a man talks with his friend" (Exodus 33:11).

The God Who Heals

Jehovah Rophe.
"The God Who Heals."
That is the name of our God.
Healing isn't just something God does.
It's something He IS.

I believe God can't touch a life without bringing healing into it. But it is not for us to say when or what that healing will look like. Sometimes it takes the form of emotional healing. Other times, God heals a character defect, or a relationship. At other times God heals a sin problem. Jesus still heals physically just as he did when he walked the earth, And He still performs the ultimate miracle of redeeming a soul from eternal death.

"Then why am I still in pain?" you may ask. I have no adequate answer other than to tell you that suffering is an extremely valuable commodity in the economy of God's Kingdom. Therefore, your reward will be great (2 Corinthians 4:16-18). God stores up every tear in a bottle in heaven (Psalm 56:8). E
ven though God knows, that if we could see what He sees, we would actually choose the same suffering for ourselves, He weeps with us anyway (John 11:35).

"[God] said, 'My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.' So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me" (2 Corinthians 12:9).

The Clever Disguise

If we revel in our own glory, we're giving ourselves too much credit.

RoseRoseRose

If we wallow in our sinfulness, we're giving ourselves too much credit.
"...the ruthless, sleepless, unsmiling concentration upon self ...
is the mark of Hell."
~ C.S. Lewis

Though one is cleverly disguised, they are each forms of pride.
The cross has taken care of both.

You Are The Beloved of God

This piece of art by Katherine Brown is my absolute all-time favorite picture of Jesus and me.
Oh wait, that's Jesus and you!

Do you know that, in Christ, you have a new identity with a new name?

The Beloved.

That's you. That's the Voice that contradicts the raucous voices in our heads:
stupid jerk, dummy, moron, loser.

No!

You are the Beloved of God.

Read what Brennan Manning says in Abba's Child: The Cry of the Heart for Intimate Belonging:

When I draw life and meaning from any source other than my belovedness, I am spiritually dead. ... "Who am I?" asked Merton, and he responded, "I am one loved by Christ." This is the foundation of [true self-esteem].

The indispensable condition for developing and maintaining the awareness of our belovedness is time alone with God. In solitude we tune out the nay-saying whispers of our worthlessness and sink down into the mystsery of our true self [the Beloved].

Our longing to know who we really are [is found] in God's relentless tenderness for us. ... Do you honestly believe that God loves you, not just loves you because theologically God has to love you? If you could answer with gut-level honesty, "Oh, yes, my Abba is very fond of me," you would experience a serene compassion for yourself that approximates the meaning of tenderness.
The first time I read this, I trembled inside. The words sounded too good to be true. It took six months, sick and flat on my back, of reading that book over and over and over for the knowledge that God loves me to sink down from my head into my heart. I pray that something in this post will touch you at your deepest point of need and speak God's love into your very being.

Blessings,

Scandalous! God Desires a Love Affair With *You*

God doesn't want a religious checklist from you, He wants a love affair! He wants to commune with you throughout the day. It is not less holy to brush your teeth, change a dirty diaper, or give a presentation at work than it is to pray. The blood of Jesus makes every part of your life holy, and He wants to be a part of it all.

Now, don't get me wrong. Prayer is important. Intercession is important. Prayerlessness is sin! But if your quiet time has degenerated into an obligatory list of drudgery-filled tasks. Give it up for a while. Allow your soul to respond to the wooing of the Holy Spirit. Get greedy for God. Experience him in an afternoon cup of coffee, a walk in nature, or a nap. Hear his voice at every crossroad. Look for Him all around you for He is there! Feel His presence envelop you. Rest.

I just don't see Jesus in the Bible waking up every morning an hour before the disciples to go through scrolls of Scripture and His list of the probably thousands of people who had asked Him for prayer. From time to time, He would go to lonely, quiet places in nature and commune with His Papa-- sometimes in preference to sleep! That is passion. Jeremiah had it. He said to God, "When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart's delight, for I bear your name, O Lord God Almighty" (Jeremiah 15:16 emphasis mine).

Passion is what God wants from us, and a legalistic, dogmatic quiet time can ruin it. Putting ourselves under a set of rules and obligatory "shoulds" actually arouses the sinful nature! (Romans 6:5 b NIV). "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, an do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. ... For in Christ neither [a quiet time] nor [a missed quiet time] has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love" (Galatians 5:1-6 NIV [my words in brackets]).

Blessings,
